DON'T DROWN
Co-op Mobile

The Project

Don't Drown is a cooperative mobile game where 2-6 players take on unique roles on a shared pirate ship being attacked by a kraken. It was created during the Vancouver Global Game Jam of 2017. The theme of the jam was "waves" and we had 48 hours to make a game.

The Challenge

Making a game in 48 hours isn't always easy. We need to make sure the whole team feels motivated by the project even thought we need to throw ideas very quickly. We decided to work on a cooperative mobile game since we wanted to try networking for mobiles. The idea of pirates comes from trying to figure out what kind of people need to collaborate and communicate a lot to be successful. We thought about a pirate ship where each person has a specific role. In Don't Drown, players can take the roles of: captain, sailor, gunner, bailer, and scout.

My Roles

My roles: game designer and programmer. There are also 4 other members in the team: one game designer, one programmer, and 2 artists.

Moments of fun!

Captain
Sailor
Gunner
Scout
Bailor

The captain is in charge of steering the ship! Turn left or right by tilting your phone to the side. The camera is positioned to see what is in front of the ship.

The sailor rotates the sails! Align the sails with the wind to make the ship go faster, or turn the sails parallel to the ship to stop it! The sailer can see all around the ship, including behind.

The gunner aim and shoot the cannons, each gunner must select a side (left or right) and can shoot cannonballs at foes. Gunners are very important when there is a Kraken around!

The scout gives extended vision to the crew. It sends their parrot abroad and the player will gain control and vision of that parrot. It allows him to tell other players what kind of danger is coming!

The bailer is essential to repair the ship. When there is too much water inside the ship, it starts taking damage. The bailer can remove the water and repair the ship.
